Grand Sun
A consequence of the huge creative explosion on the European west coast, Grand Sun emerged in Lisbon in 2016, a melting pot for a new wave of indie rock projects both in line with international contemporary production while also linked to their own Portuguese roots. This artistic synergy led the band to debut with “Apolo” (Single, Xita Records, 2016) and The Plastic People of the Universe (EP, Aunt Sally Records, 2018) - psychedelic pop records that reflect on the band’s first influences. As a result of these, and while promoting it, they played live in a set of dates around southern Europe in a tour shared with international bands such as Triptides (US), Naked Giants (US) and Hickeys (Spain). The band did press cuts, interviews and media releases, gaining relevance in the national press (Publico P3, Antena 3, SBSR FM, Radar FM).
In the summer festival season of 2019, they played at Ecos do Lima Festival, Sofar Sounds and Festa do Avante. They finished the year in a sold out party at Titanic Sur Mer (a prominent venue in Lisbon) to present the first single “Feeling Tired” from Sal Y Amore, their debut LP. In the beginning of 2020, the band released “Veera,” a dream rock single that gained international press coverage, and in March, Grand Sun released the album, with the single “Circles” being featured on national television. In 2020, a year dedicated to recording sessions and restricted shows due to COVID-19, they were part of Pinehouse Concerts, a nationally broadcasted show that spotlights the best Portuguese/Brazilian contemporary indie rock artists. During this time, they were also selected as one of FNAC’s Best New Talent artists, debuting at the historic Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon. The band resumed touring between the summer of 2021 and 2022, performing the album live in venues and multiple festivals across Portugal and Spain. By changing the creative concept in order to adapt to their own current reality, they sonically explored post-punk revival while reflecting lyrically about the social nuances in Portugal and the inevitable setbacks of adult life. In January 2023, they finished recording their upcoming EP, preceding their first shows in the US in March. In tandem with their debut at New Colossus Festival in New York City, the band released their new single “Conceptualize” on March 8, which was followed by the June 2023 release of a collaborative music video with the female Portuguese feminist art collective “Manas”. On November 2023, the band releases “Something More”, a fast-paced post punk anthem, with a video shot in New York City, where Grand Sun's shows in The New Colossus Festival were widely acclaimed by the press, premiering the songs from the new EP, to be released in 2024.
